But patience is rewarded somewhat on the 16th, where Tillinghast hands players an elevated tee, a right-angle fairway and an opportunity to slice a 565-/535-yard par-5 in half with one sharp thwack. Waiting groups congregate around the starter's booth above the first tee, likely impatient and on edge from Bethpage's early check-in and backed-up tee sheet. For walkers, this is the first of three strenuous climbs on the back nine. Its green, cut into the middle of the hillside that leads back up to the clubhouse, is defended by a dangerously deep bunker on the left and the uneven nature of the sloping terrain on the right. Bay Park is one of the four County-operated nine-hole courses in Nassau, a wide-open par-30 that's perfect for beginners and those looking to iron out some wrinkles in their swings. The ninth is 449 yards from the middle tees -- go off line here and par is likely a pipe dream. The green course at Bethpage supposedly ranks as Bethpage's 2nd easiest course. Over in Bethpage, traditionalists might opt for the bar-and-grill experience at B.K. Across the street, a recent regrading of the putting surface evaporated much of the fear factor that existed for players standing in #2's fairway or front bunker. Six of the next eight holes are par-4s that measure 418, 466, 492, 462, 466 and 482 yards from the back tees.
